The Five Sacred Confluences (Panch Prayags)

The Alaknanda river cascades from Satopanth glacier, gathering tribute rivers at five holy confluences before becoming the holy Ganga at Devprayag.

Ancient Dynasties & Royal Epochs

From Vedic references in the Skanda Purana's Kedarkhand and Manaskhand to sovereign mountain kingdoms.

Katyuri Dynasty (c. 7th – 11th Century)

Capital: Joshimath, later Baijnath (Katyur Valley)

The first unified empire to rule over the entirety of Uttarakhand. Master architects of monumental stone temples at Jageshwar, Baijnath, Katarmal, and Gopeshwar. Established Nagara temple architecture across the central Himalayas.

Chand Kings of Kumaon (c. 10th – 18th Century)

Capital: Champawat, later Almora

Founded by Raja Som Chand in Champawat. The Chands developed Kumaon's golden age of trade, literature, and stone sculpture, constructing the Baleshwar Temple and expanding territorial sovereignty up to the Tarai plains.

Panwar Kings of Garhwal (c. 9th – 20th Century)

Capital: Chandpur Garhi, Srinagar, later Tehri

Founded by Raja Kanakpal. In the 15th century, King Ajay Pal consolidated the 52 independent chieftain forts (Garhs) into the sovereign Kingdom of Garhwal, successfully defending sovereignty against Mughal intrusions.
